The whole district around Hongik University is the center of distinctive entertainment cultures where young artists gather, and it is always crowded with people. The district has become a major business district, and the presence of various cafes, small-sized galleries, shops, fashion stores, and flea markets gives dynamic and energetic atmosphere to the area. Various unique art events, street performances and festivals add to the unique and charming culture of Hongik University.

Based on such culture, with a goal to bring art close to everyday lives of the local residents and the public, The Street Art Exhibition has been held annually since 1993. During the event, students exhibit their artwork in residential areas by the University. The Street Art Exhibition has been expanding in size and scope as students not only exhibit artworks and various art-related designs, but also engage in mural painting, street media arts, and street performances. In addition, workshops held during the event brings more direct participation of the general public, and the Street Art Exhibition is poised to grow into a bigger art festival.
