ABOUT HONGIK
Hongik University was founded on the educational philosophy of "Pro Hominium Beneficio, service for the benefit of all humankind”. Hongik University campuses are connected through a cooperative network, consisting of Seoul Campus in the center of university culture, Sejong Campus in Sejong City, a special administrative zone, Daehakro Campus, an international standard educational research center and performance facility, and Hwaseong, the 4th Industrial Revolution Campus, which mainly consists of leading research facilities.
In 2023, Hongik Art & Design Valley was built, with a length of 250 metres and total floor area of 17,190㎡. Constructed as a start-up education center, it will become a local community space for youth start-ups, industry-academic cooperation, and culture and arts endeavours. The Valley will provide opportunities for various convergence activities including start-up related education and practical participation through collaboration with various companies, organizations, and industry experts.
Through the "New Hongik Project", Hongik University held an international nomination contest to design and create a new unified campus complex. This campus complex will comprise of 6 stories underground (100,000 square meters), and up to 16 stories above ground (40,000 square meters), equivalent to the size of 14 soccer fields within the existing Hongik University campus. The founder of OMA, Rem Kolhaas, renowned for his three-dimensional and unconventional building designs including Beijing CCTV headquarters, Seattle Public Library, and the Leeum Museum of Korea, was selected. Through the establishment of this innovative campus, Hongik University will foster creative and convergent global professionals in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. The new campus will house various facilities related to art, design, and architecture, such as art galleries, libraries, lecture rooms, and industry-academia cooperation facilities.
The University’s 362,655㎡ 4th Industrial Revolution Campus located in Hwaseong City, will become a campus serving as a platform for industry academia collaboration, working with over 300 companies and research institutions. Through research facilities such as the AI and Semiconductor Convergence Research Center, Smart Mobility Research Center (SMRC), and Autonomous Driving Research Center, important collaborations will be made with companies including K-City (Autonomous Driving Experiment City) of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Samsung Electronics Hwaseong Plant, Mado Bio Valley, Hyundai-Kia Motors Namyang Research Center, and Hyangnam Pharmaceutical Complex.
Daehakro Art Center, equipped with a proscenium-type grand theater and a black box-type small theater, provides a space for not only large scale musical performances but also smaller creative performances. It has established itself as a renowned cultural center and attraction hosting various performances in it’s 703 seating musical theater and smaller 200-300 seating theater. The School of Performing Arts, which offers an undergraduate convergence education system, is fostering the development of musical professionals, including actors, producers, and stage staff, who will lead the global performing arts world beyond Asia.
Hongik University holds international exchange programs with 108 overseas sister universities in 30 different countries, study abroad programs, dual degree opportunities, and cooperative curricula. Through these, the University is strengthening its capacity to foster global professionals with the ability to successfully connect industry to art. Long term development strategies focused on education and fields of study, support infrastructure, research and industry – academic cooperation, and the emergence of skilled men and women, will help ensure Hongik University’s position as a top 100 global University leading the way into the 4th Industrial Revolution.
